red

RedproductI've been buying a few product red things lately. A t-shirt from the gap, a bracelet also from the gap. Paul just bought the product red nano. These products are a way to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. It's a small thing, but thinking about fair trade products and how your purchasing can affect a global economy matters. The last globally minded post?

further green

If you were inspired to green your home from last week's Green Festival, then a trip to Future Green could be useful. This small store opened on Church St last Feburary and carries a wide array of fair trade products for the home. They have everything from gift items/things to decorate, clothing, to flooring and eco-friendly paint. It's a great resource if you are trying to find green building products.

flying day

ImgcartoonbullfishThis Saturday, the Red Bull Flugtag will come to Baltimore's Inner Harbour, in front of the Maryland Science Center. How did I hear about this event? Well, I spend pretty much every Wednesday night there. The flying day, really isn't about flying. The teams will perform a skit before pushing/pulling/getting their craft off the flight deck, and ultimately not really flying. These crafts do not look like planes and therefore don't fly like planes. It's a good time and good to remember, two of the three judging criteria is creativity and presentation. There is no cost to attend the event, gates open at 11am and the first flight is at 1pm.

sustainable

GreenfestivalBeing green today goes far beyond recycling and taking public transportation.  There are also issues of sustainable develoopment, fair trade, global justice and even greening a funeral. At this week-end's Green Festival you can hear speaker's on many different topics relating to being green today, buy green products, participate in movement and yoga classes, watch live performances, and even have some food. Here is a full schedule. The festival is Saturday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 6pm.  Tickets are $15 for a day, or $29 for both days.

moon change, moon change

MooncakeEver since I had to work that show, anytime anyone says moon anything, I immediately sing to myself, "Moon change, moon change." This Saturday, in New York's Chinatown there will be an Autumn Moon Festival from 12 to 5pm.  This is a celebration of the moon, a bountiful harvest and a little romance.  The center of the festival will be on Mott Sts, but dragon and lion dancers will make their way through Chinatown.  There will be a display of Chinese lanterns and performance on the main stage on Mott St.  Admission is free, be sure to eat a moon cake!

doth thy turkey leg fill-th?

RenfestI loved Renaissance Fairs as a kid. I have even staffed a few, my first was in sixth grade as a school fund raiser. That was immense fun, complete with a complex, hundreds-of-dollars to make, maze. Then I worked in the local one a couple of times in high school. No, there really aren't many short Asian girls in Renaissance Europe, but it was still fun. Go into it thinking of it as fun, and not some nerd LARP thing. The Maryland Renaissance Festival occurs during the week-ends in the fall. The last week-end is the week-end of October 22nd. The festival is open every day scheduled, rain or shine. The festival is located right outside of Annapolis, about an hour away from DC. Come with money, cold hard cash.  It is not cheap, admission for adults is $17 and food in the festival grounds is not inexpensive.

zeitgeist

RedefinedI really thought I had written a post this before, I hope I am not double posting. When I was in Wildwood a few weeks ago I had a great conversation about art, the different genres of art, what we liked/disliked, the epistemology of art, great topics after a few drinks. That is why I found this article to be so interesting. It is a review of the current Corcoran show redefined, which takes pieces from the permenant collection and exhibits them in a new manner, a trend in exhibiting in musuems. What I really like about the article, it has a discussion about a few of the pieces from the exhibit and is able to put those pieces into context, for some, both from the context of when it was painted/created and in the context of today. I love the visual arts. Also I love the performing arts, but the visual arts resonates with me in a way the performing arts could not. I think this article can give an insight into certain pieces and make them more accessible, rather than the piece just looking like a picture of pee.
redefined will be on display until January 2007. The Corcoran is open Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm with a $8 admission. On Thursday evenings from 5pm to 9pm, admission is pay-as-you-wish.

saturday art

ArtsonfootSaturday, in the Penn Quarter will be the annual street festival Arts on Foot. The festival will take place rain or shine from 11am to 5pm in the area between 4th and 14th streets, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue and L Street, NW. During the festival you can purchase visual arts to take home, participate in performing arts through a improv workshop, kids can create their own art, eat some artistic food, or you can watch different perfomances.  Lots to see and do! Parking is hard downtown, it will be harder with a street festival closing down some streets, take Metro.

Yes, yes, I know my Google calendar widget is not-quite-right. I am trying to work on it.....
